DIAGNOSTIC DENTISTRY

Dental X-Rays

Dental imaging helps us assess areas that cannot be fully seen during a clinical examination, supporting more accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

Why might your dentist recommend an X-ray?

Some dental problems develop between teeth, beneath existing restorations, around tooth roots or within the jawbone. X-rays provide information that complements the clinical examination and can help us plan treatment more confidently.

X-rays may help assess

  • Decay that is difficult to see directly
  • Tooth roots and the surrounding bone
  • Impacted or unerupted teeth
  • Bone levels around teeth
  • Dental infections and other areas of concern
  • Orthodontic, surgical or restorative planning

What to expect

Clinical assessment. We determine which view, if any, is useful for your specific dental concern.

Image capture. Dental X-rays are generally quick and painless. The positioning depends on the type of image required.

Review. Your dentist examines the image alongside the clinical findings and explains anything relevant to your care.

Are dental X-rays safe?

Dental X-rays use ionising radiation, so they should be prescribed when clinically justified rather than taken unnecessarily. Modern dental imaging uses relatively low radiation doses, and appropriate precautions and exposure settings are used according to the examination required.

Do I need an X-ray at every visit?

No. The need and timing depend on your symptoms, examination findings, dental history, age and individual risk. Your dentist will recommend imaging only when it can provide useful diagnostic information.

Need a closer look at a dental concern?

Book an examination and your dentist can determine whether imaging is appropriate for your situation.
