When a filling may not be enough
Some teeth have too much damage for a conventional filling but still retain enough healthy structure that a full crown may not be necessary. Inlays, onlays and overlays are indirect restorations made outside the mouth and bonded to the prepared tooth.
What’s the difference?
Inlay: fits within the chewing surface without covering the tooth cusps.
Onlay: replaces the damaged area and covers one or more cusps.
Overlay: provides broader coverage of the chewing surface while remaining more conservative than a full crown in suitable cases.
They may be considered when
- A large filling needs replacement
- Decay or fracture is too extensive for a direct filling
- A back tooth needs additional protection
- There is enough healthy tooth remaining to avoid full crown coverage
The treatment process
After assessment, damaged or decayed tooth structure is removed and the tooth is prepared. An impression or scan is taken so the restoration can be made to fit the tooth and bite precisely. A temporary restoration may be used where necessary before the final inlay, onlay or overlay is bonded in place.
Which restoration is right for me?
The choice between a filling, inlay/onlay, crown or another treatment depends on how much healthy tooth remains, the location of the damage, your bite and the condition of the tooth. We will recommend the most conservative predictable option for your individual case.
