SMILE DETAIL
Tooth Gems
A small decorative detail for your smile, professionally applied after checking that the chosen tooth and surrounding gums are healthy.
What is a tooth gem?
A tooth gem is a small piece of decorative dental jewellery bonded to the enamel surface. Professional application typically uses a dental bonding technique rather than drilling into the tooth.
Before placement
- The tooth and gums should be healthy
- The enamel surface is assessed
- Gem position is planned with cleaning in mind
- We discuss care, retention and removal
The appointment
The tooth surface is cleaned and prepared, the selected gem is positioned and a dental bonding material is used to secure it. You will receive instructions on cleaning around the gem and what to do if it loosens.
Retention varies between people. A gem should be professionally reviewed or removed rather than picked or forced off at home.
Keeping the area healthy
Good brushing around the gem is important because plaque can collect around any bonded object. If you notice discomfort, gum irritation, a rough edge or loosening, contact the clinic for assessment.
