Tooth Masking

Aesthetic treatment for selected localised tooth-colour concerns, planned according to what is causing the discolouration and the condition of the tooth.

What do we mean by tooth masking?

Tooth masking is a broad cosmetic term for techniques used to reduce the visible effect of a colour difference or aesthetic defect in a tooth. The appropriate method depends on whether the concern is on the surface, within the tooth structure, related to an old restoration or associated with previous injury or treatment.

Why assessment comes first

  • Discolouration can have different causes
  • A dark tooth may need diagnostic assessment
  • Existing fillings or crowns affect treatment choices
  • The health of the tooth and gums must be considered
  • Not every colour concern requires a restoration

Possible approaches

Depending on the diagnosis, options may include professional whitening, tooth-coloured composite material, a veneer, a crown or another restorative approach. In some cases, no treatment may be necessary.

Our aim is to use an approach appropriate to the tooth rather than simply covering a change in colour without understanding why it occurred.

A natural-looking result starts with the right diagnosis

Shade matching is only one part of aesthetic dentistry. Shape, translucency, neighbouring teeth and the amount of healthy tooth structure all influence the final result. Your dentist will explain what can realistically be achieved before treatment begins.
