RESTORATIVE DENTISTRY
Root Canal Treatment
Treatment for an inflamed or infected tooth, designed where appropriate to relieve symptoms and preserve your natural tooth.
Why might a root canal be needed?
Inside each tooth is soft tissue called the pulp. Deep decay, cracks, trauma or previous dental work can sometimes allow this tissue to become inflamed or infected. Root canal treatment removes the affected tissue, cleans and shapes the internal canals and seals the tooth.
Possible signs
- Persistent or severe toothache
- Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold
- Pain on biting or chewing
- Swelling or tenderness around a tooth
- A tooth that has darkened after trauma
These symptoms can have different causes, so an examination is needed before treatment is recommended.
The treatment journey
Diagnosis. We examine the tooth and usually assess it with appropriate dental imaging.
Comfort. Local anaesthetic is used so the tooth can be treated comfortably.
Cleaning. The affected pulp is removed and the root canal system is carefully cleaned and shaped.
Sealing and restoration. The canals are sealed, and the tooth is restored. Depending on how much tooth structure remains, a crown or other protective restoration may be recommended.
Can every painful tooth be saved with a root canal?
Not always. The long-term outlook depends on factors such as the amount of healthy tooth remaining, cracks, gum and bone support, and the nature of the infection. We’ll explain whether root canal treatment, another restorative option or extraction is the more predictable choice.
Dental pain deserves a proper diagnosis.
Book an assessment so we can identify the cause and discuss the most appropriate way forward.
