Tooth Extraction

When a tooth cannot reasonably be preserved, careful extraction can help relieve pain, manage infection and protect the surrounding oral health.

When is extraction considered?

Our first preference is to preserve a natural tooth when doing so is clinically appropriate. Extraction may be recommended when a tooth is too damaged to restore predictably or when keeping it would create an ongoing problem.

Reasons may include

  • Severe decay or infection
  • A tooth fractured beyond predictable restoration
  • Advanced gum disease with poor support
  • Selected teeth for orthodontic planning
  • Impacted or problematic wisdom teeth

What happens during the procedure?

Assessment. We examine the tooth and review relevant X-rays before confirming the plan.

Local anaesthetic. The area is numbed before the tooth is removed.

Extraction. The technique depends on the tooth position and condition; some teeth are straightforward while others require a surgical approach.

Aftercare. You receive instructions on protecting the socket, eating, cleaning and when to contact us if you have concerns.

What happens after a tooth is removed?

Not every extracted tooth needs replacement, but losing certain teeth can affect chewing, appearance and neighbouring tooth position. Where appropriate, we can discuss options such as a dental bridge, denture or another suitable replacement after healing.

For impacted or difficult wisdom teeth, see our Wisdom Tooth Removal service.

Have a painful or badly damaged tooth?

An examination will help us determine whether the tooth can be treated or whether removal is the better option.
